Anastasia started production in 2012 when a reading of the musical was held, starring Kelli Barret as the titular character and Aaron Tveit as Dmitry, her love interest.

Its workshop was held on the 12th of June 2015 in New York City, wherein a new character and antagonist, Gleb Vaganov who was played by Ramin Karimloo, was introduced in order to replace the original villain Rasputin in the animated movie.

The musical’s original stage production starring Christy Altomare as Anya (Anastasia) and Derek Klena as Dmitry premiered for previews at the Hartford Stage in Connecticut on the 13th of May 2016. This production was directed by Darko Tresnjak and choreographed by Peggy Hickey.

On the 24th of April 2017, starring almost all of the same actors in the principal cast of the original Hartford Stage production, Anastasia opened on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre.

Since then, multiple productions of the musical have been performed, including but not limited to a North American tour, a European production in Madrid, Spain, and a German production in the city of Stuttgart.

The Broadway production of the musical presented its last performance on the 31st of March 2019 after 808 regular performances.
